“Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves.” – Rainer Maria Rilke, Letters to a Young Poet

Maddy Barber is a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Nationally Certified Counselor, and has been working in the mental health field since 2015. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from James Madison University, and later received her clinical mental health training in Tempe, Arizona in the Master of Counseling program at Arizona State University. She has provided care to clients in a multitude of treatment settings – including acute inpatient, long-term residential, community-based services, and traditional outpatient clinics.

Her clinical training included a focus on multiculturalism in counseling, and she is passionate about social justice initiatives and advocating for the holistic health needs of marginalized communities. She specializes in treating trauma and stressor-related disorders, and has extensive experience working with adults who are survivors of childhood abuse, sexual assault, and domestic and intimate partner violence. She is also experienced in treating depression, anxiety, adjustment-related challenges, grief and loss, and interpersonal issues.

Her approach to therapy is trauma-informed and draws from evidence-based practices, including Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and she often incorporates tenets of Internal Family Systems in counseling sessions. She strives to develop genuine, positive connections with clients, and believes that humor has a special place in therapy. She is skilled in working with emerging and young adults. Maddy believes exploring, understanding, and accepting all the parts of ourselves and our experience is some of the hardest and most valuable work to be done, and she is committed to
working collaboratively alongside clients to do so.

Most recently, Maddy completed the Certified Clinical Trauma Professional Training Level 1 (CCTP)which included a detailed look at emerging and continued research related to the multidimensional impacts of trauma on cognitive, emotional, neurobiological, and somatic functioning. Maddy utilizes continuing education opportunities to develop and sharpen skills to most effectively support and treat clients who are seeking therapy to recover from trauma.

Outside of work, Maddy is a lover of music (extra points if it’s live!), camping, gluten-free baking, and spending time with loved ones – especially her two rescue boxers, Maslow and Watson.
