A Life Changing Career Experience

Before I entered graduate school, I worked in a residential facility for severely disturbed children. Not only was I responsible for treatment planning and daily interventions, I also lived in-residence with these children. Learning the “psychology trade” on the front lines was a career-altering experience. The practical, hands-on delivery of care was a reality that textbooks and classroom instruction could not provide. Witnessing the day- to-day struggles of these children and families made me realize how important my role as a psychologist was. I also discovered that my preparation needed to incorporate resourceful skill sets to be able to meet the challenges of re-building these children’s health. As a result of this experience, I gained the optimism, the determination, and the appreciation to dig deeper to find meaningful solutions.
