Neurofeedback
What is Neurofeedback? Brain brightening! Neurofeedback is a computer-assisted non-invasive, non-drug way to help your brain become more flexible, stable, and functional. Neurofeedback uses a form of EEG-based biofeedback by measuring your brainwaves.
Additional information:
Brainwaves occur at various frequencies. While early training emphasized particular frequency, more recently emphasis has been on training flexibility or appropriateness of brain rhythms.
- Alpha waves-relaxed but not drowsy
- Beta waves- outward focus, alertness
- Delta waves- deep restorative sleep
- Gamma waves- integrated thought and waves that bind information from various areas of the brain
- Theta waves- creative insights, day-dreaming
When these brainwaves are not functioning optimally, people struggle with a wide range of symptoms, such as migraine, poor impulse control, emotional dysregulation, impaired concentration or memory, or difficulty learning. Neurofeedback helps a person retrain these brainwaves to optimize their functioning.
Neurofeedback encourages specific areas of the brain to speed up or slow down as needed, essentially stabilizing brain activity. Neurofeedback training encourages flexible and adaptive brain wave communication that results in the experience of moving more smoothly from one state of arousal to another. Eventually, no more training is required to maintain these improvements!
